Table Knight Games is looking for an experienced freelance VFX Artist to support us in the development of UnderMire, our co-op roguelite adventure. UnderMire is set in an exciting new world rich with adventure, danger, and playfulness, and an ambience of teen-friendly thrills and spookiness.
UnderMire is being developed in Unity with a small fully remote team across North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East.

As you will see from the trailer and the screenshots, we are already using some VFX, but we are looking to take things to the next level with the right collaborator.
Our art direction takes inspiration from cartoons and comic books, with a bold and stylized look. You will put your creative stamp onto the visual effects across the game, with a strong focus on magic gameplay and elemental action effects, as well as supporting effects in the environment.
Work will be contracted and delivered on a milestone basis. We are in the late stages of production, aiming to launch later this year.
Proficiency and experience with Unity’s particle effects systems and visual graphing tools are a must have for this role. VFX assets you will deliver include particle systems, meshes, shaders, visual graphs, textures/materials, and so on. You can use any software package you like to produce the assets, provided you have the appropriate licence for its usage.
The effects should be delivered as fully self-contained, production-ready Unity prefabs. You will also be responsible for importing them into Unity, organising them, and integrating them into our various gameplay assets (attack prefabs, environmental assets, etc.) We will track the work using a detailed production spreadsheet, and we can discuss our internal technical approach regarding performance, lighting, shaders, and third party packages to ensure your work is compatible with our tech and pipeline.
We will keep in close communication throughout the project using Discord to discuss questions, technicalities, and details, and iterate on your work. We can also take video calls as needed to talk through your work or support you live.
Responsibilities include:
Collaborate closely with the Game Director and Art Director to refine and develop the VFX look and style for the project.
Work with our tech team and pipeline for delivering, testing, reviewing, iterating, and documenting your work.
Be available for a video/voice call 1-2 times per week on our Discord channels, during our core team hours (12:30pm - 4:30pm UTC)
Be available to chat over text regularly on our Discord channels, also during our core hours, to discuss your work.
Design, build and deliver all VFX as needed. Our needs span a large variety of topics including magical and elemental gameplay and attacks, environmental hazards, and more.
Document your work clearly.
Lightweight self-production skills - be able to accurately estimate and breakdown tasks into realistic deliverables.
Experience and qualifications required:
Experience designing VFX on other shipped games.
Knowledge of VFX deliverables, Unity’s URP and older built-in pipeline, and development tools needed across the development life cycle.
Be able to discuss your workflow and creative approach using examples from your portfolio.
Strong communication skills in English to collaborate with team members around the world.
Ability to self-manage, organize, and prioritize work based on the milestones.
